Historical Trips

We used to look out from I-95 and wonder about the rotating railroad bridge down in the Middle Branch of the Patapsco. One day, we just realized that we could visit it close up. The Spring Garden Swing Bridge provided a crucial rail connection to industrial facilities along the western shore, and remains a monument to Baltimore’s industrial past.

The mid-Atlantic’s long and rich history is full of stories, conflicts, destruction, and collaboration. Geology, weather, and human decisions have shaped what we find today. We can hike, ride, or paddle out to historic places and ruins throughout the area. During the trip, you will learn about the original creation of these relics, as well as the forces that led to their disuse and destruction. We’ll talk about what the future might hold for them as well.
